CONGREGATION REALIZES FRUITION OF THEIR GOAL IN NEW FAITH CENTER
By Nita Trask
Prescott Community Church, located at 3151 Willow Creek Road at the corner of Montana Drive, held a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Sunday, August 31, 2014 to mark the culmination of thirty years of endeavors and hopes for the congregation. The new facility, The Faith Center, will fulfill their need for a space large enough to accommodate church and community functions. Nine of the original charter members still on the church roster are: William and Kathy Brown; Beverly Burns; Roberta Davis; Dolores Glattfelder; Doris Postle; Debbie Smith; Margaret Smith and Terri Wayman.
It all began on January 10, 1982 when a group of people, looking for a church home held their first meeting at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott. Their enthusiasm led to an organizational meeting on January 28, 1982 when they became a non- denominational congregation, choosing the name Prescott Community Church. Finding it difficult to secure a steady minister, they realized that they needed a connection with an established denomination. After inviting ministers of various faiths to preach and present principals of their religious practices, they decided to join the Reformed Church in America and were received into that membership on May 1, 1983.
Looking forward to eventually building a Sanctuary and educational facility, the congregation purchased 4.2 acres of land at 3151 Willow Creek Road in Prescott in July 1983. They quickly paid for the land and held a Mortgage Burning event on January 8, 1984.
A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on October 6, 1985 in anticipation of erecting an all-purpose; two levels building that would include classrooms, nursery, administration rooms and fellowship as well as recreation areas. Their plans were thwarted when hard rock was discovered only two feet below the ground where the basement level had been planned. They then built the Sanctuary above ground where services are still conducted every Sunday.
In 1992, they built an educational facility named the McShane Building to alleviate congestion in the Sanctuary. They included a small kitchen and were able to hold meetings and luncheons in the largest classroom. Church dinners were held in the Sanctuary as well as worship services. As you can see, it was far from an ideal situation. They envisioned a fellowship hall to complete their facility.
In 2006 the congregation was disappointed again when the latest efforts of building a fellowship hall did not succeed. Perhaps it was not in God’s plan.
Therefore, a new Building Committee, working with the current Pastor, Dave Ellis, was formed in 2010. After four years of studying, praying and planning, the vision of the church’s founders was realized with the Groundbreaking Ceremony. Finally, the Faith Center will be home to weddings, receptions, community gatherings and other functions, as well as a new venue for Connections Contemporary Services that meets at 9:15 each Sunday. Construction is scheduled to start in September.
