Prescott Community Church is extending an invitation to the quad-city community to join in a Maundy Thursday Service  and Holy Communion. This will be held on April 6, at 5:30 PM in the Sanctuary, 3151 Willow Creek Road, Prescott.

So, what in the world is Maundy Thursday? Also known as Holy Thursday, it is the Thursday during Holy Week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday when Christians celebrate the Lord’s Supper. The date always falls between March 19 and April 22 depending on whether the Gregorian or Julien calendar is used liturgically.

Palm Sunday represents the joyous event when the people welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem. Easter Sunday honors the day Jesus arose from the grave, bringing hope to the world. Maundy Thursday, however, carries overtones of solemnity. It was the day of the Last Supper and preceded Jesus’s darkest hours before his crucifixion.

The word, Maundy, is derived from the Latin word, mandatum, meaning “Commandment”. The synoptic gospels each give an account of The Last Supper or The Feast of Passover, and 1 Corinthians contains a detailed description. From the account, it is apparent that Jesus, providing an example to his Apostles, humbled himself by washing and drying their feet. He instructed them to do likewise and told them they would be blessed by doing so. He then commanded, “Love one another as I have loved you.” John 13:34.

The Eucharist or Holy Communion is another important Christian custom evolved from the Last Supper. When Jesus took the bread and gave thanks he gave it to the apostles saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for many. When you drink it, remember me.”

Prescott Community Church's service will lead the worshippers on a journey from the Last Supper through the Crucifixion in preparation for Sunday's glorious resurrection worship.  You are invited to join the journey on Maundy Thursday, April 6 starting at 5:30PM.
